Midnight signing party for Turn Coat

Borders in Oak Brook had a midnight reading/signing party for Turn Coat, the eleventh Harry Dresden book. Author Jim Butcher was in sweet home Chicago for it.

I wandered over just in case Jim needed bums in seats, but it turned out he already had a great crowd. I gave my card to one of the Customer Service people and they brought me back and I chatted with Jim for a few minutes before he had to be on, so that was fun. Very nice, humble guy. I got the feeling he'd much rather spend 20 minutes talking about his son than his books. He did tell me a funny story about how the Codex Alera books were the result of an internet argument.

I didn't stay for the event. It was late, I'm not big on crowds and I already got my chat in with Jim. It's interesting to compare and contrast a Jim Butcher in store event with an E.E. Knight appearance:

Jim ButcherE.E. Knight
AttendanceSix hundred people, half in costume.
  • One reader (yay!)
  • a woman in the back who needs somewhere to sit while she reads text messages on her cellphone and cries
  • a guy who owes my dad a favor
  • a writer trying to pitch his photobook project of "lost pet" posters
ActivityHand cramps up from signing hardcovers.        Directs people to bathroom.

Was it your fake Hollywood producer card, or did the E.E. Knight Author at Large work?

Visa. He bought something nice at Red Envelope before taking me back to see Jim.

Jim is one of the nicest people (let alone writers) that I've ever met. I'm glad you got a chance to meet him.

I would totally come to one of your signings too. :)

Oh, don't be so stuffy. If you came to Australia, I'd throw you a party! :p But nooooo, you have to stay in the continental US...

I'm going to Jim's signing in Roseville tomorrow. He was at Th Uncles a couple of years ago and I got to chat with him for quite a bit. Very nice man. This will put Jim at 2 signngs I've attended, while I believe you hold the lead with 3. The two of you at the same time would be a lot of fun.

I'd do it if Jim would agree. I could open up his books for him so he could sign faster.

If you come to the Washington, DC, area I'll come to your signing. I promise not to cry. But I would invite you to dinner and bake you a cake. (Ask n5red about my cakes!)

Alas, I don't get the reference. But my curiosity is piqued (has been for days now, was out of town and didn't have time to reply); what is it?

It added a note of drama rare to an E.E. Knight event.

I'm glad that my years of writing at Starbucks have given me a deft hand in directing people to bathrooms.

Sadly, I live a bit far away to get to any signings by you :( Can't afford to drive from Oklahoma just for that :P
