And the aptly-named "Vampire Squid from Hell" - a creature of extreme depths

I love how quickly they change their color and shape- even adapting the little bumps like the corals nearby.

I really like the invisible octopus footage. Very neat.

It's a measure of how media-suffused we are that my initial reaction to the first video was, "It's just like a special effect!"

Then I had to kick myself in the head.

Made sad by your reaction. Then made Happy by your wisdom.

In fairness to the squid, I thought it was the best special effect ever.

The invisible octopi are beautiful. And all the more remarkable since they are completely color-blind. I always pictured the Kurians as vampire squids. In fact, the vampire "squid" is neither a squid nor an octopus, but is the terminal member of its own Order - or, as I like to think, the scouts for the KIF (Kurian invasion force). ;)

One of the more interesting theories, I thought was that it's an ancestor of both. The turning itself inside out functionality is very weird, I can't think of any other organism that does that.

If one follows the phylogeny, they're siblings. Octopi, Vampyri, Cuttlefish, and Squid are all Neocoleoidea and branch from the Coleoidea SubClass where they are second cousins with Nautiloids. Teuthology is fascinating. The Coleoidea have some of the largest brain-to-body ratios making them - relatively - highly intelligent. Their photophoric skins, ability to produce ink, and optic organs are incredible.

I think the closest to "inside out" that you can get is the starfish's and frog's ability to turn its stomach inside out and some ruminants' ability to expel portions of their digestive systems out of their mouths. Definitely nowhere near doing a 180 with your entire body... :)
