OryCon Day One

I'm Writer Guest of Honor at OryCon in Portland. They've been very good to us, flexible about me traveling with family and so on. Jim Pavelec from back home Chicago way is Artist Guest of Honor, so I finally, after who knows how many cons together, got to be on a panel with Jim ("Cover Art in the Age of Ebooks" but it should have been called "Artists and Authors Bitch about the Cover Art Process").

The kids are traveling well. We received several nice compliments on the flight about how good the baby was (Chats nursed her during the ascent and descent so there was no crying, but the Sprog had a very tough descent). We've been traveling around in a Dodge Grand Caravan, and I like it a lot for Family Utility reasons but it would be tough to street park in Oak Park.

Portland's a nice city. It reminds me of La Crosse except with tall buildings. Lots of bicyclists to watch out for. About half of them seem very cognizant of road safety and wear appropriate gear, another percentage throws on a bright shirt or hat, and the rest -- well, I'm glad I was able to negotiate the city at night without killing anyone.

Plenty of Steampunk at the con. Steampunk costuming is really taking over. Wish I'd brought my goggles.

I don't have an official reading or signing, so I've just been doing a catch-as-catch-can signing books after panels. I'm surprised at the number of people showing up with both series. Usually it's just one or the other.

Chats has been stuck in the room a little too much, eating room service and keeping everyone occupied while I do my panels. After this is all over we're heading to the coast for some real family time.

Let's see, next panel is on Apocalyptic Storytelling. That should be a fun thing to face at 10AM on a Saturday morning.

The question of the day

I know re-writing Hamlet's soliloquy is sort of the poor-man's YouTube of the Downfall Hilter meltdown with new subtitles, but here goes:

To Blu-ray, or not to Blu-ray--that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The tweaks and retcons of meddling Lucas
Or to close wallet against a shower of bastardy
And by inaction, ignore the updates. To think, to remember--
No more new versions--and by keeping old editions we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That CGI enhancements bring. 'Tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To keep our old laserdisc special edition--
Where Han shot first: ay, there's the rub,
For in that flash of badassery a character was defined
When careless Greedo shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause. Lucas has no respect
For moments precious of our early life.
For what kind of jerk practices pederasty on our theatrical joys,
Th' meddling's wrong, wrong as Jar-Jar’s contumely
The outrages against fannish love, the blu-ray's delay,
The musical insult of Max Rebo’s band, and the blinks
That Ewok eyes turn into nightmare fuel for my son,
That Lucas himself might another 30 million make
With a new edition? Who would object,
At seamless branching allowing one to choose an edit,
Saving me the dread of some new burping noise,
At Boba Fett’s death, for from Sarlacc’s gullet
No traveller returns, barring further retcons,
And Lucas makes us bear the price of the box set
Until future versions that we know not of?
Thus 1080p and lossless audio does make cattle of us all,
And thus the glorious hue blu-ray’s resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of new CGI,
And Vader’s moment of great change and conquest
With another “NOOOOOOO!” turns awry
And lose the importance of action. -- Soft you now,
The fair Leia! -- Nymph, in thy Slave Girl outfit
Be all my sins remembered.
