E. E. Knight

Again, I must thank Paul Youll for doing such an excellent job.

This is the version he believes the publisher will use:

He likes this one too:

I'll know for sure in six weeks or so when I see it with all the titles.

Even better, he likes working with the author and getting input/feedback. I'm very lucky Penguin selected him.

I think it's the best of the series. But then I always think my latest book is the best of the series.

That's because your latest book IS always the best.

That's gratifying. You're very sweet.

It's BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

I like the top one best....where he's looking straight ahead. LOVE the smoke and the cave....and how his wings have holes in em....and how skinny he is. Makes me ache to read this book and find out why. Yanno?

They plumped him up a little from the sketch. I wish the cave were a little darker and more shadowy, but I'll go with this.

I actually like the second one better; it shows a bit more of the personality I'd expect from him. It's more of a nervous look. That said, they're both gorgeous and make me covet a higher-resolution version or a little framed poster. I have no problem with decorating with dragons -- I'm already planning on ordering this)!

Fans have ordered pics from Mr. Youll before. He does them himself on a very high quality printer, you can't tell the difference from something you'd buy at the gift store in the Chicago Art Institute. You can contact him through his website if you like.

I agree. I haven't read the book, so I can't say what his personality is - but that 2nd pic has a more paranoid look to it.

Holy crap!!! Youll is as much a genius with the brush as you are with the pen (no butt-kissing intended, just my honest opinion). I personally like the second one where he's looking over his shoulder. He did a great job with the injured arm and wings. Wow...

Though I don't know the story, I guess I kind of envisioned this cover with the copper's head lowered. A little sneakier and devious. But that's just me. ;)

Expression-wise, I like the first a bit better. The expression in the B&W sketch came through a little stronger, I think the color is masking it a bit. He looks pretty calculating, which is how he is written. Most of the time.

Fantastic work. I like the first version better, myself. I love the detail of the torn wing with the flap of skin curling over, and the gizmo on his other wing joint. Nice touches. I can't wait to read the book. ARgh, I hate having to wait. lol

His wing-skin get a little beat up in the book. I may have to do something at the copyedit stage to match the art, because I just describe a couple bites and an arrow hole or two.

But the joint gizmo is quite cool. Again, that's the kind of detail you get when the author and artist get to work together. I wish that were of a standard in the industry.

I definitely understand what you're saying. I don't know if you've seen the artwork for Janine Cross' Dragon Temple Saga, but the covers make it look like Dragon Bordello Saga or something. Totally not the character or the feel represented in her books.

I've been following those books. A lot of people have got the wrong idea about them, though I don't know if the covers are at fault or what. Dark Feminist Fantasy Dystopia (if that makes sense) is closer to the mark. They're certainly not about tits and dragonsex.

Ironically, Youll also does the covers for those. Even more ironically, the Cross art has appeared in the "Spectrum" best fantasy art collections (I think it was vol 13).

That's a surprise. I think you got the better end of the deal there.

Yeah, the covers make the protagonist look like some generic fantasy super-sexed woman. If someone were just to go off the cover art, they'd get one heck of a surprise with the subject matter and the depressing storyline.

Which reminds me that I need to go down today or tomorrow and pick up the third release. lol

Fantastic work! The copper looks better than I could've imagined. The clean gradients on the first two books were nice, but I like that you're going with a full background this time around. Can't wait to get my hands it.
